Cabbage Rolls with Savory Beef Filling
Ingredients:
For Filling:
- 8-10 cabbage leaves
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 beaten egg
- Cheese of your choice for toppings
For the Sauce:
- 1 8 oz can of tomato sauce
- 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 2-3 tbsp chili garlic sauce
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
Directions:
- Boil a large pot of salted water. Remove the core of the cabbage by cutting around it at a 45-degree angle. Cut deeply into the cabbage, about 1 1/2 inches, and trim around the removed core for easy leaf removal. Boil the cabbage for at least five minutes, and the leaves will easily pull away.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the egg and milk. Combine ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and rice. In a separate bowl, mix tomato sauce, sugar, chili garlic sauce, and lemon juice.
- Remove 8-10 leaves from the boiled cabbage. Lay them out to cool. Place approximately 4 tbsp of the filling mixture on each leaf and roll it up.
- Pour a layer of sauce into a casserole dish. Arrange cabbage rolls side by side and cover them with the remaining sauce. Cover with a lid or aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 1 hour. Grate your favorite cheese on top after removing from the oven.
