Gourmet French Onion Soup Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of dry white wine (optional)
  • 4 cups of beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 6-8 slices of crusty bread, toasted
  • 2 cups of shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish or casserole dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, approximately 25-30 minutes.
  3. Once the onions are caramelized, add minced garlic and sugar to the skillet. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and caramelized.
  4. If using, pour the white wine into the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the alcohol to evaporate and the flavors to meld.
  5. Pour the beef broth into the skillet and add Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for another 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.
  6. Arrange the toasted bread slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Ladle the onion soup mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are completely covered.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  9. After 20 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the casserole is heated through.

Enjoy this indulgent French onion soup casserole straight from the oven!
