Gourmet French Onion Soup Casserole
Gourmet French Onion Soup Casserole
Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1/2 cup of dry white wine (optional)
- 4 cups of beef broth
- 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 6-8 slices of crusty bread, toasted
- 2 cups of shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish or casserole dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, approximately 25-30 minutes.
- Once the onions are caramelized, add minced garlic and sugar to the skillet. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and caramelized.
- If using, pour the white wine into the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the alcohol to evaporate and the flavors to meld.
- Pour the beef broth into the skillet and add Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for another 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.
- Arrange the toasted bread slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Ladle the onion soup mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are completely covered.
- Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the casserole is heated through.
